Pipe Heaters for Construction Industry

Situation
A construction company was awarded a contract to repair roads in a local community. The road surface painting used an asphalt mixture that was stored in a 5000 gal tank. Here parts were dunked into a flammable liquid. Temperatures needed were 95 degrees F but because it was in a hazardous environment, a rating of Class 1 Div 1,2 Group C,D was required for safety purposes.

Solution
Wattco offered pipe heaters for this application that would not only provide the heat transfer the customer needed but also gave reassurances of safety in a busy working environment. 3 inch pipes SCH 40 rating were used and aligned in each of the tanks. Each pipe had a heat transfer fluid that used a flanged heater with tubular elements that were 120 feet in length. These industrial heaters are fairly inexpensive and easily replaceable should the need arise. Temperature controllers were also added to maintain the liquid at a 95 degree temperature with 1 degree accuracy. A NEMA 7 terminal box was used to address the explosion proof requirement. The heat transfer from the pipes to the mixture allowed for safe operation and, maintenance as the tank did not need to be emptied if any of the process heaters needed to be examined.

Benefits
Maintenance free electric heaters for heat transfer system
Temperature controls that ensured 1 degree accuracy
Explosion proof housing for hazardous areas
The tanks did not need to have the liquid drained for maintenance inspections
